The University of Western Sydney has recently joined the Health Program of the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre (CMCRC) and has 1 PhD scholarship available for outstanding candidates who will undertake research related to the efficiency of the Australian health care system. ABOUT THE PROGRAM The CMCRC Health Program is highly interdisciplinary and combines elements of health policy, health economics, epidemiology, public health, data mining, predictive analytics and simulation modeling. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to perform applied and valuable work in the health field, to work with leading scientists from an array of Australian universities, to interact with industry partners such as government agencies and health insurance funds, and can expect their research to be translated into tangible outcomes. CMCRC research is about providing a better understanding of the efficiency of the health care system and conducting research that can inform both policy makers and industry stakeholders. CMCRC research is also about realising commercial benefits from innovation, and the CMCRC provides direct participation in commercial results for PhD Students. The PhD student will be matched to a government agency in Sydney, NSW, and is expected to spend a significant amount of time with the agency and/or at the CMCRC, interacting with other students and researchers affiliated with the CMCRC health program. CRITERIA Candidates must have a 1st class Honours degree or a Masters degree with a major research component, an exceptional academic record, strong written and verbal communications skills, and an ability to work in a team environment. Candidates will have strong quantitative skills in one of the following fields: epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, health economics, machine learning, data mining, signal processing or computer science. An understanding of the Australian health care system and a background in health research is preferred, but is not a strict requirement. Candidates are expected to have excellent computer programming skills and be comfortable with the analysis of complex and large data sets. WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDE? A scholarship of $50,000 per annum tax-free for up to three years will be offered. The scholarship is a living allowance and does not cover tuition fees. Australian residents in the CMCRC program are awarded funded places in the degree program. International students can usually apply to their university or faculty for a fee scholarship, or fee waiver.
