[beasiswa] [info] PhD Student Fundamental studies on crystallization processes

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 1900 people.

For the SNF funded project "In situ studies on the formation and metamorphosis of amorphous calcium carbonate clusters" we are looking for a

PhD Student

Fundamental studies on crystallization processes

Your tasks

The project aims to elucidate fundamental processes as relevant to the nucleation, crystallization and dehydration of carbonates using synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopy and other offline techniques. With the thesis project, a novel experimental approach based on microdroplets will be developed together with experienced scientists embedded in the team working at the PHOENIX beamline of the Swiss Light Source (SLS) and chemists at ETH Zurich.

Your main task will be:

  • Performing situ studies on the formation of amorphous and crystalline carbonates
  • Development and use of new experimental equipment to study nucleation processes using aerosol based techniques
  • Data analysis and writing of publications
  • Presentation of results at conferences

This challenging PhD project will be done at PSI. The PhD degree will be awarded at ETH Zurich within the group of Prof. Dr Jeroen van Bokhoven.

Your profile

You hold a Master diploma in physics, chemistry or a related field and enjoy experimental work in the laboratory. You like to actively design difficult experiments and want to decipher fundamental processes. In addition you like working in an interdisciplinary project between physics and chemistry and have a good understanding of physical chemistry and thermodynamics. Furthermore you have excellent communication skills and enjoy working with other people. Knowledge of aerosol based technologies and synchrotron radiation is a plus.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.

For further information please contact Dr Thomas Huthwelker, phone +41 56 310 53 14.

Please submit your application online (including addresses of referees) for the position as a PhD Student (index no. 6411-00).
