[beasiswa] [info] PhD in the Exploration and Environmental Geophysics group, ETH Zürich

The Exploration and Environmental Geophysics group of Prof. Dr. J. O. A. Robertsson, Institute of Geophysics, Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich, has three open
PhD Positions
The research projects are part of a large EU innovative training network on "Waves and wave-based imaging in virtual and experimental environments" (WAVES) and have a common theme of data-driven inverse scattering and imaging. The positions are also closely related to a novel wave propagation laboratory for immersive experimentation currently under construction at ETH (WaveLab). For two of the positions the successful candidates will explore perfect data-driven time-reversal and acoustic cloaking/shielding, respectively. These positions are expected to have a strong experimental focus and take advantage of the complete control in the characterization of media that is possible in the WaveLab, with its fully closed surfaces of sensors and actuators. The third PhD position will have a somewhat more theoretical focus where the successful candidate will explore and extend recent results related to full-waveform Green's function retrieval inside realistic heterogeneous media. The project start dates are between 1 Sep 2015 - 31 Dec 2015.
A successful applicant will have, or expect to obtain by the start date, an MSc degree in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or similar and should have a strong background and/or interest in mathematical (Geo)physics and (inverse) scattering but must also be equally concerned with how their results could be tested and applied (e.g., in the WaveLab). Experience with full-waveform modelling methods (e.g., finite-differences) is a definite advantage. Good written and oral communication skills in English are a must. Please note the EU Marie Curie eligibility criteria and mobility rules which apply to these positions: Eligible candidates must be in the first 4 years of their research career, and have not yet been awarded a doctorate degree. At the time of recruitment by the host organization, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
For further information please contact Prof. Dr. J. O. A. Robertsson or Dr. Dirk-Jan van Manen at dirkjan.vanmanen@erdw.ethz.ch (no application documents) or visit our website http://www.eeg.ethz.ch.

We are looking forward to receive your online application latest by April 1st 2015. It should include a cover letter that describes research experience, scientific and professional/career goals. Moreover it should include an academic transcripts/list of courses completed or ongoing, including grades/notes and the CV has to include the contact information of three referees.  Please do not include letters of recommendation with the application - these may be requested later. Please send it to: ETH Zurich, Human Resources, Mrs. Maja Bügler, 8092 Zurich.
