The database research group at the University of Salzburg, Austria, opens a fully funded PhD position. The PhD candidate will work with the database group and be enrolled in the Doctoral College "Geographic Information Science". The research focus of the database group (http://dbresearch.uni-salzburg.at) is on similarity queries over large data collections, load balancing algorithms for distributed frameworks like MapReduce, and queries in geographic information systems. The research results are new algorithms with performance guarantees, which are implemented and evaluated on the motivating application. The Doctoral College "Geographic Information Science" (http://dk-giscience.zgis.net) brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the fields of geographic information science, geoinformatics, geomatics, and geography. The PhD candidate will benefit from firsthand insights into these application fields and enjoy a high-quality education program. Research topic: The research focus of the PhD candidate will be in spatio-temporal databases, for example, isochrone queries, spatial similarity queries, and large scale GIS data management. Requirements: Applicants must have a master's degree in computer science or a closely related field, a strong background in algorithms and/or databases, good programming skills, and be fluent in English. About the position: We offer a great working atmosphere as well as remuneration according to the Austrian University collective bargaining agreement (yearly gross salary approx. EUR 28,000). Contracts will be awarded for three years with the option to extend for a fourth year. The PhD students enrolled in the program will spend a semester at one of our 14 partner universities worldwide.
