Description
The group of Ivo Hofacker (TBI/BCB, University of Vienna) is offering a three year PhD position in the context of a project entitled "Virus
mRNAs: evolution and structure-function relation". The project is a collaboration with Thomas Rattei (Cube, Univ. of Vienna) and Dimitrij
Frishman (Frishman Lab, TU Munich). Our lab is well known in the RNA research field, is run by a multidisciplinary team, offers a friendly
working environment and state of the art computing infrastructure. Additional information about our group can be obtained
at the BCB and TBI websites. The position will start on January 1st 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. It includes a fully equipped
work space, and access to travel and publication funds.

Job description:
The successful applicant will work on the topic of virus genomics. The PhD student has to perform RNA sequence/structure analysis and should
be able to implement user friendly software tools. First tasks will be reviewing, testing and benchmarking of existing approach. Furthermore
tools that work in other domains of life have to be adapted to the fast evolving virus genomes or new software needs to be implemented.
Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must have a masters or equivalent degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, life
science or related disciplines. A background in computer science as well as basic knowledge on RNA computational biology is
desirable. Scripting, e.g. Perl, and programming skills, e.g. C, C++, Java, are mandatory.
