Aufgaben:
The PhD position is part of the SNF Project 'Physical vulnerability to torrent processes - Contributing factors and spatial analysis' at the Group of Geomorphology, Natural Hazards and Risk Research, Institute of Geography, University of Bern (www.geomorphrisk.unibe.ch). The project is associated in a wider framework of integrated risk management. In mountain regions, economic losses due to severe mountain hazard processes increased significantly in the last decades. Torrent processes including debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows and fluvial sediment transport are a particularly destructive form of mountain hazards. Within an integrated risk management, vulnerability is a key factor and also the main source of uncertainty in risk reduction.
Anforderungen:
Your work will include the following tasks: i) the extension of existing studies for the empirical quantification of vulnerability to torrent processes by compiling comprehensive data on the degree of loss, process intensity, elements at risk and surrounding characteristics; ii) deducing different vulnerability functions, analysing the uncertainties and regional differences, iii) developing further vulnerability models and iv) analysing spatial effects influencing the physical vulnerability.
Wir bieten:
Our PhD candidate has a Master degree in the fields of geography, hydrology, geosciences, environmental sciences or similar. The candidate has basic knowledge in geomorphology (torrent hazards) and related risk assessment as well as in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistics software. Additional skills in modelling, advanced statistical techniques, or database programming are an asset. Motivated to take on initiative and responsibility within own research. Good team player open to contribute also in multi‐disciplinary research team. Dedicated to scientific excellence, high quality of work, well‐structured and organized. Willing to regularly publish and present own research, good communicating skills. The working language is preferably German, but English is also possible; knowledge of German would be an asset in any case.
