The Power and Energy Systems Group of the University of Queensland, Australia, invites applications for a PhD position in the condition monitoring of power transformers. In this project the candidate will focus on developing sensors to measure the levels of water in transformer insulation, use these sensors to improve the modelling of water, and then improve reliability models for transformers.
Most utilities are facing the problem of operating ageing power equipment reaching its end of life. Water is one issue which if it becomes too high the transformer will either age prematurely or will fail catastrophically. The candidate will have the opportunity to liaise closely with five industry companies, which are one manufacturer and four utilities, and will be supervised jointly by Prof. Tapan Saha and Dr. Dan Martin.
The applicant is expected to have a Master's degree in an electrical engineering topic and should have an outstanding academic record.
