Karolinska Institutet
has a vacancy for
A doctoral student with doctoral grant in bacteria and cancer

Department
Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

Description of research group and project
Our laboratory has as main focus to study the role of chronic bacterial infections in promotion of carcinogenesis.
Homepage: http://ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=27086&a=25826&cid=27089&l=en

This project is mainly focused in understanding the carcinogenic properties of the bacterial cytolethal distending toxin (CDT), the first bacterial genotoxin identified. The study is structured in two subprojects:

I. Characterization of the CDT internalization pathway
II. Assessment of the carcinogenic potential of CDT in vitro

Duties and responsibilities
The candidate should have a strong interest in the fields of cancer biology and cellular microbiology. The project will require the development of new techniques for our lab, such as genome-wide iRNA library screen, therefore a dose of resourcefulness will be considered in the evaluation of the suitable candidate. The carcinogenic properties of CDT will be studied by using mutagenesis assays, and by evaluating the effects of long-term intoxication in tumor progression (e.g. alteration of the DNA damage repair pathways, acquisition of genomic instability, epithelial to mesenchymal transition, anchorage independent growth). Techniques such as DNA sequencing, immunofluorescence analysis (confocal microscopy), soft agar assays, real time PCR, production of toxin chimeras by molecular biology will be used.

Eligibility/Qualifications
We require a person who is highly motivated, has the maturity and interest to work independently, socially competent and able to work as a team-member. Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project and previous laboratory experience in similar fields will also be considered an important merit. It is an advantage if the candidate have participated in research projects that led to scientific publication.
Very good knowledge in English (both spoken and written) is a requirement.

To be eligible for doctoral studies at KI, an applicant must either
1. hold a Master's degree or equivalent, or
2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at Master´s level, or equivalent, or
3. have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad.

Those who meet the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 HEC or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of July, 2015.

Selection is made of qualified applicants on the ground of their ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria:
- Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project
- Analytical skills confirmed by a scientific dissertation or the equivalent
- Other documented knowledge/experience of potential significance to doctoral education in the subject
An overall assessment of the applicants' qualifications will be made.

The vacancy will be filled on condition that the successful applicant is admitted to doctoral education.

For further information on doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet, see www.ki.se/doctoral.

Form of employment:
Doctoral student

Notes
After admission, the student will receive doctoral student allowance for the first two years, which, after the half-time control, will be transformed into a paid position as PhD-student. The PhD-studies cover a maximum period of the equivalence of four years full time studies.
Regulations concerning graduate students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance, chapter 5, §§ 1-7.

-Name and addresses of two referees
-Letter of motivation (maximum 1500 words)
CMB is a department strongly focused on basic science conducting research in several areas of cell, molecular and developmental biology. Currently approximately 270 persons are employed or affiliated at our department.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical
universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
