Denmark: PhD Fellowship in Molecular Neurogenetics/ microRNA Research at BRIC Univ of Copenhagen
Two PhD Fellowships are available in the group of Associate Professor Roger Pocock at BRIC, University of Copenhagen. Research in the group is focused on neuronal development and microRNA-mediated stress responses.
1. PhD Fellowship in Molecular Neurogenetics
PhD area of research
The aim of this project is to identify novel molecular factors and pathways that specify neuronal cell fates. interested in studying how stress-responsive neurons are programmed in C. elegans. This work will provide novel insights into how neuronal networks regulate stress responses. The project involves a wide range of techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry and neuroanatomy.
2. PhD Fellowship in microRNA Research
PhD area of research
We are interested in understanding how animals control stress responses. To this end, we have identified specific microRNAs in C. elegans that are required under stress. The PhD position will involve characterization of the stress-responsive roles of these microRNAs at the molecular and cellular level. The fellowship is founded by the European Union.
Concerning both positions:
Qualifications
We are looking for highly motivated, ambitious candidates with an MSc in Biology, Bioche-mistry, Biotechnology, or equivalent. Experience in molecular biology and genetics are desirable, and interest in C. elegans and neurobiology is essential. The ideal candidates will be team players and have excellent communication skills. Furthermore, it is a condition that the MSc is assessed equivalent to a Danish MSc by the Danish Agency for International Education ( www.iu.dk ).
Place of employment and work
The employment and place of work is at BRIC, University of Copenhagen. BRIC is located close to the centre of Copenhagen, in the Copenhagen Biocenter. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a young, dynamic and international research environ-ment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories, a number of core facilities shared between the 16 research groups and well-functioning administrative and technical support.
Terms of salary and employment
The appointments are for 3 years and scheduled to start in 2011. They are conditioned upon the candidates´ successful enrolment in the PhD programme at Faculty of Health Sciences. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the candidates during an initial short-term employment as research assistant.
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with the ministerial orders from the Ministry of Education on the PhD degree and the University´s rules on achieving the degree.
The successful candidate will be part of BRIC´s research school MoMeD www.momed.ku.dk
Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with agree¬ment between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 24.500 DKK (ca. 3.350 EUR) plus pension.
