Post-Doctoral Marine Scientist (Impact Evaluation) – #15084

 

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Post-Doctoral Marine Scientist. Under the supervision of the manager, she/he will collaborate with WWF staff and partners to monitor evaluate the ecological impacts of marine protected areas (MPAs), in Indonesia and elsewhere.

 

S/he will provide support for day-to-day implementation of large-scale ecological monitoring efforts in the Bird's Head and Sunda-Banda Seascapes for WWF.  S/he is responsible for managing large ecological datasets, conducting analyses and communicating results. S/he will be responsible, in collaboration with others, for building the institutional capacity of local Indonesian scholars to implement well-designed ecological monitoring.

 

Post-Doctoral positions at WWF represent an opportunity to engage directly in policy-relevant research, and gain experience working in multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, cross-cultural teams.  Post-Doctoral positions based at WWF differ from similar positions based in academic institutions, in particular, the Post-Doctoral Scientists are expected to engage in day-to-day program management and provide technical assistance, as needed, to WWF field programs.

 

Responsibilities:

In collaboration with an interdisciplinary, cross-organizational team, the Post-Doctoral Marine Scientist will:

  1. Analyze coral reef monitoring data, in collaboration with others, to document ecological conditions in MPAs and similar non-MPA controls.
  2. Analyze the ecological impacts of MPA establishment in the Bird's Head and Sunda-Banda Seascapes.
  3. Manage and maintain existing ecological databases, preparing shareable versions of the database, as needed.
  4. Maintain updated instruments, protocols, field manuals and other training materials to support the implementation of well-designed monitoring in Indonesia and elsewhere.
  5. Provide technical assistance to field teams to translate scientific analyses into policy-relevant insights
  6. Build the capacity of local field teams and others to implement well-designed monitoring (in particular, on appropriate data management and analysis procedures).
  7. Support the implementation of ecological monitoring protocols in new field sites in Indonesia and elsewhere, as appropriate.
  8. Write up of results from the above and other related work for both peer-reviewed publication and internal audiences.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in marine science (e.g., ecology, fisheries) or interdisciplinary science (e.g., environmental science)  required
  • Knowledge of coral reef systems is required.
  • Strong quantitative and statistical skills are essential, with demonstrated experience working in R.
  • At least 3 years of experience analyzing large data sets and working with relational databases, and familiarity with impact evaluation techniques.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a cross-cultural, inter-disciplinary team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time is required. Will travel internationally for conferences. Must be able to travel to Indonesia for extended periods of up to 3 months at a time
  • Knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS is preferred.
