One three-year PhD studentship (starting September 2015) on "Gas phase reaction dynamics of bio-molecules" will be available in the group "Theory and modeling" at the laboratory, under the direction of Dr. R.Spezia. The student will work in a joined France (ANR) and USA (NSF) program on theoretical methods to understand and predict reactivity of bio-molecules in gas phase by means of chemical dynamics simulations. The student will enroll the graduate school of Université Paris Saclay.
We have developed and applied a QM+MM approach for chemical reactivity induced by low energy collisions with rare gases. The aim is to provide a theoretical understanding of unimolecular and bimolecular reactivity. One goal will be to understand what occurs in electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) experiments and to provide a computational tool to provide theoretical ESI-MS/MS spectra independently from experiments. Another goal will be to understand formation of organic and biological molecules in the interstellar medium related to the extraterrestrial origin of life and pre-biotic chemistry.
The student should have a formation in physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and/or molecular physics. Knowledge of scientific programming will be an advance. For international students speaking French is not required.
The student will work at the CNRS "Laboratoire Analyse et Modélisation pour la Biologie et l'Environnement" belonging the graduate school of Université Paris-Saclay. The laboratory is located in the south of Paris area (30 minutes from downtown Paris by city train). The student will have the opportunity to collaborate with the group of prof. W.L.Hase (Texas Tech University, USA) who is a world leader in the field of reaction dynamics and other experimental groups in France and Europe.
For student actually doing a M2 in the field it will be possible to arrange an internship in the current spring prior the beginning of PhD.
