The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the  University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, is offering a  full PhD scholarship to both domestic and international applicants.      The PhD candidate is to conduct research in the area of error  correction coding, with a focus on quantum key distribution systems.  The candidate will by supervised by Associate Professor Sarah Johnson  (http://www.newcastle.edu.au/profile/sarah-johnson).      This scholarship is part of a joint project with Australian company  QuintessenceLabs and the Australian National University (ANU) funded  by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant on the topic of  error correction coding for quantum key distribution.      Applicants are required to have achieved honours class one in a  relevant discipline (for example Electrical Engineering or Applied  Mathematics) or have other equivalent research based qualifications.  The applicant is also expected to have a strong foundation in  mathematics and be able to satisfy the University's English  proficiency policy. Past experience in error correction coding  research is not necessary but will be considered favourably.      The scholarship meets the full tuition fees (and overseas student  health cover costs if required) for a period of three years. It also  provides a tax-free living allowance of AUD 25,406 per annum (2014  rate, indexed annually) with a further top-up available to exceptional  candidates. All University of Newcastle students also have access to a  minimum of AUD 1,500 per annum for research-related expenses and are  issued a new laptop on their commencement.      Interested applicants are to submit the following materials to A Prof Johnson at  Sarah.Johnson@newcastle.edu.au:      • A cover letter indicating the applicant's research interests      • Curriculum vitae      • List of publications (if any)      • Academic transcript(s)      • Theses topics (bachelor's degree and/or master's degree)      • Evidence of English language proficiency e.g. IELTS or TOEFL (for  international applicants)          Primary consideration will be given to applications received before 30    August 2014. However, the position will remain open until filled.
